Seminar title: "Violence of norms versus violence of violations: the boundaries of transgression”

Abstract:  This paper examines violence not as an aberration or anomaly, but as a constitutive element of human existence and social order. Drawing on philosophical, phenomenological, and sociological perspectives, I propose that violence is merely a contextual ethical assessment with extremely vague criteria. Ontologically, violence is a form of action (the application of force), and therefore the creation (production) of space. I argue that any relationship capable of creating space inevitably implies the drawing of boundaries between the permissible and the unacceptable, and that such boundaries are maintained only by force. Violence is thus understood as the contraction of another's space and its incorporation into the actor's own. This assumption allows for a reconsideration of a number of social, political, and ethical norms. For example, according to this view, institutions arise from the repetition of actions (applications of force), stabilizing force within norms and redirecting collective intentionality. Liberal spaces are particularly vulnerable because their egalitarian principles demand high levels of energy from all participants, thereby creating incentives for the delegation of power and the rise of authoritarian leaders. Against this backdrop, violence emerges as the paradoxical foundation of law, politics, economics, and culture: it shapes spaces, institutions, and identities. Thus, the task is not to eradicate violence, which would mean abolishing the entire structure (including any social one), but to understand the mechanisms of violence (action) and critically reorient the vectors of its application.

Brief information about the Permanent Seminar “Post Scriptum”

International philosophical seminar we organized with prof. Christoph Lumer (member of  GAP - Association of Analytical Philosophy in Germany, professor at the University of Siena). In September 2023, thanks to the invitation of the GAP a delegation of Ukrainian philosophers participated in the GAP Congress. After the Congress, we held an international workshop on the topic "ETHICS OF THE UKRAINE WAR"  and already after this workshop we organized an ongoing seminar, which discusses topics that related to the philosophical understanding of the war in Ukraine in a broad context. The language of the seminar is English.

I hope that this seminar will become one of the active platforms for dialogue between Ukrainian and Western philosophers, etc. I sincerely invite you to  join our  initiative.

The seminar is held jointly by the Department of Philosophy of Odessa I. I. Mechnikov National University and the Department of Philosophy of Kryvyi Rih State Pedagogical University
