On September 9, 2009, at the Faculty of Psychology and Pedagogy of Kryvyi Rih State Pedagogical University (since May 24, 2011 – Kryvyi Rih National University), the Department of Preschool Education was formed by separating from the Department of Theory and Practice of Preschool Education and Primary Education for the training of specialists in preschool education. In 2014, the department was merged with the Faculty of Technology and Pedagogy, which led to the reorganization and renaming of the faculty to Preschool and Technological Education.

Since its founding, the department has been headed by Dr. O. V. Kovshar, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor.

In 2018, for the first time in the Kryvyi Rih region, the educational and pedagogical program “Speech Therapy” was introduced for the first (bachelor's) level of higher education in the specialty 016 Special Education. It trains applicants for a bachelor's degree in higher education, and in 2022, a master's program will open in the same specialty.

In February 2024, the department was renamed to Preschool and Special Education. Now, the department offers bachelor's and master's degrees in two specialties.
