The history of the newly established Department of Sociology and Social Work at Kryvyi Rih State Pedagogical University is the history of two powerful scientific and pedagogical centers that have been training professionals, developing science, and introducing innovations in education for many years. Today, the department fulfills the social demand for highly qualified specialists in the field of sociology, social and socio-pedagogical work for educational institutions, cultural institutions, industrial enterprises, sociological services, consulting agencies, institutional development enterprises, and the media in Kryvyi Rih and Dnipropetrovsk region. 

The merger of the two departments in 2025 was a logical step in the university's development, aimed at integrating sociological and socio-pedagogical knowledge, strengthening scientific potential, and expanding opportunities for students. The new department combines a deep sociological tradition with a practical orientation toward social work, which allows it to train a new generation of specialists—practitioners capable of effectively addressing the social challenges of today.

The department offers educational and professional programs in Social Work (bachelor's degree, specialty I10 Social Work and Counseling), Sociology of Mass Communications (bachelor's degree, specialty C5 Sociology), “Social and Pedagogical Work with Children and Youth” (Master's degree, specialty A1 Educational Sciences), “Social Work and Counseling” (Master's degree, specialty I10 Social Work and Counseling) and the educational and scientific program “Sociology” (postgraduate studies, specialty C5 Sociology).

Academic staff of the Department successfully combines teaching activity with scientific and scientific-methodical work. As a result, new specializations are opened with the help of the lecturers of the department.

Academic staff of the department is working on the scientific theme “Preparation of the future social teacher and primary school teacher in terms of competent education”.  This research is headed by Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Shimko I.

Lecturers of the department are active participants of many conferences of various levels. They participated in the International Scientific and Practical Conference “Topical Issues and Problems in the Development of Social Sciences” (Międzynarodowa Konferencja Naukowa), International Scientific Conference on the Status, Problems and Prospects of Pedagogical Research and Social Work (Sladkovichevo, Slovak Republic), “Global challenges of teacher education in the university space” (Odessa), II International scientific and practical conference “Actual problems of applied psychological and educational science” (Berdyansk) and others.

Lecturers of the Department manage the organization of scientific work in circles and problem groups. Their scientific achievements are published in the annual collections “Modern education in realities and perspectives: social and pedagogical aspect” and “Topical issues of social and pedagogical and primary education”. Moreover, student subject competitions are systematically conducted in basic special educational disciplines, which are held under the guidance of the lecturers of the Department.

The department creates conditions for teaching postgraduate and doctoral students, who will ensure the growth of their scientific potential in the nearest future.
