The Department of Sociology and Economics has been working since the Institute’s existence. Initially it was the Department of Marxism-Leninism, then the Department of the Political Economy and Scientific Communism, later as the Department of Sociology, and since February 2005 as the Department of Sociology and Economics.

The first head of the Department was Henadii Kotelnikov. From September, 1994 to January, 2017 the Department was headed by Alla Lobanova, Doctor of Sociological Sciences, Professor. Since 2017, Candidate of Sociological Sciences, Associate Professor Iryna Hrabovets is the Head of the Department.

The Department cooperates with scientists of the Institute of Sociology of NAS of Ukraine, many secondary and higher educational establishments of Ukraine, with sociologists of Poland .

Moreover, the Department provides professional and methodical training of 16 economic, 12 sociological courses at all faculties of the Kryvyi Rih State Pedagogical University.

Since 2018, the Department initiates training specialists in the educational program "Sociology of Mass Communication, Journalism and Advertising", on specialty "Sociology".
