Since its creation, the department has been systematically researching current literary problems that have emerged in its fruitful scientific work.

From 2001 to 2010, the Department held 10 International Scientific-Theoretical Conferences "Ukrainian Literature: Spirituality and Mentality".

In 2011 the department chose a new perspective direction of scientific work. Today the complex research topic of the department is "Poetics of artwork", which allowed to expand the horizons of scientific research. In the field of research interests of scientists is the study of problems of theoretical, practical and historical poetics of works of fiction. Much attention is paid to the analysis of the poetics of folklore. These approaches provide not only a closer look at the works of Ukrainian and foreign literatures in the unity of content and form, but also trace syntagmatic-paradigmatic and comparative links between texts, authors, eras and more.

Since 2013, the Department has hosted 3 International Scientific-Theoretical Conferences "Literature of the World: Poetics, Mentality and Spirituality", the results of which 13 issues of the collection of scientific works were published.
